A 1-year-old girl was thrown down a garbage chute by her uncle, sending her tumbling three floors to the basement incinerator inside a Staten Island apartment building Monday afternoon, cops said.
The baby suffered only minor abrasions to her torso after being tossed down the chute inside the seven-story building near Steuben St. and Weser Ave. in Park Hill about 3:10 p.m., cops said. The incinerator wasn’t on when she landed, officials said.
The uncle dropped the baby down the chute on the third floor following a “domestic incident” with his family, cops said.
The baby was taken to Staten Island University Hosptial North in stable condition, officials said.
The infant’s mother was hysterical as medics rushed the victim into an ambulance, neighbors said.
“That’s sad. To put a baby down to the garbage,” neighbor Keisha Lacey told ABC 7 New York. “Nobody in their right state of mind would do something like that to a child.”
“I’m hurt,” a second neighbor, Milton Franklin, said. “I’m just going to pray that God wraps his arms around his family and that they get through the situation.”
Cops took the uncle into custody for questioning. Charges were not immediately filed.
